Hands down the most asked questions about my recent master bedroom reveal have to do with the closet makeover that involved replacing our bi-fold closet doors with curtains. Apparently I’m not the only one with a mad hatred of those clumsy bi-fold doors! I was pretty leary about how this little project would turn out but having curtains instead of doors on our closet has been a total game changer. It’s not only way better looking than before but also every inch of our closet is now easily accessible which is huge when you’re living in an older house that’s majorly lacking in storage space

Apparently I’m not the only one with a mad hatred of those clumsy bi-fold doors! I was pretty leary about how this little project would turn out but having curtains instead of doors on our closet has been a total game changer. It’s not only way better looking than before but also every inch of our closet is now easily accessible which is huge when you’re living in an older house that’s majorly lacking in storage space!

So for those of you have been thinking about tackling this project in your own home, I’m sharing the how-to and all of my sources for getting the job done starting from the beginning with the pretty horrendous ‘before’:

Most closets with bi-fold doors simply have two doors that connect in the middle, in which case you can simply remove both doors and the track they attach to, do a little patch work with wood putty, and be done with it. Our closet had a center support between the two closet doors that needed to be removed so I called in my contractor to tear that out (after making sure it wasn’t a necessary support), add a new header, and patch the hardwood floors:

placing broken, outdated or unattractive closet doors with curtains can be a stylish, easy and affordable solution, perfect for master bedrooms, kids’ bedrooms or home offices.

If you have sliding doors, removing existing tracks isn’t necessary if they aren’t damaged. Simply install the curtains with tension rods or dowels in the tracks or on the wall. Custom cornice boards add an elegant touch in a bedroom. A vibrant color on the closet’s back wall can also add to the decor.

Replace closet doors with curtains in children’s rooms, offering easy access to the closet’s contents without endangering little fingers. Add a chest of drawers with cubbies next to the hanging clothes for a cute design splash.

I would like to see the closet behind those curtains! I am in process of planning a closet make-over for 11 yr old boy; need storage, shelves, baskets, etc NOW..and will grow into youth.

Have a glass front cabinet and worried that you might not be able to keep your linens display-worthy? Try this little trick and add shirred fabric to the inside of the doors.
